FDA Says Store-Bought Bones Are Bad For Your Pup

You shouldn’t give your dog your leftover chicken bones because they can break into splinters. You shouldn’t give them large raw bones because they can be full of germs (and if they weren’t at first, they will be once your dog has dragged them all over the yard.) Now, more bad news: the FDA says store-bought dog bone treats are dangerous, too.

They have received reports of bone treats killing 15 dogs and harming a few dozen others. That may not sound like a lot, but probably plenty of pups were harmed without their owners thinking to file a complaint with the FDA.

The treats we’re talking about are the ones made from actual bones that have been baked or smoked, and they may be covered with flavorings and preservatives. The injuries include cuts to the mouth, blockage of the digestive tract, choking, and more. We don’t have odds on whether a particular bone treat will hurt your dog, so better to play it safe.
